The Home Depot

Scan a room with your phone. Get a floor plan.

I designed an AR mobile app that lets customers scan rooms with their phone camera to generate floor plans. The app detects walls, doors, and windows automatically and connects measurements to Home Depot's product catalog. It also includes remote connection to in-store associates.

The difficult part

What shaped the work

AR tech limits and the timeline shaped the work. This era of AR meant working within what Apple's AR kits offered at the time — researching and learning those technical constraints, then designing inside the flexibility they allowed.

Who I worked with

The handoff to engineering left enough time and enough clarity — the flexibility in Apple's AR kits at the time meant the designs could be implemented within the technical limits we had researched.

The Problem

Customers browsing online couldn't tell how products would fit their space. In-store measurements were inaccurate, material visualization was limited, and the expertise available in-store didn't carry over to digital.

The Design

I designed an AR-powered measurement tool that lets customers scan rooms with their phone camera. The app detects walls, doors, and windows automatically, generating floor plans that integrate with Home Depot's product catalog.

Expert Connection

The experience includes real-time connection to in-store associates who can view the customer's space, recommend products, and annotate room scans with suggestions.

Results

Registrations rose 40%. Project completion rate rose 76%. Add-to-cart rate rose 20%. The app shipped on iOS and Android and is still live in stores. I also designed the desktop experience for customizing a home with 3D assets matched to store inventory, checking out, and working with consultants.
